Over the last number of years, I have learned to fish and come to love the places where one can fish. Below are some tidbits of the places I've had the honor to fish.
-----------------------
Freshwater Fishing - Camitagua and Guri Lakes, Venezuela
The lakes of Venezuela are alive with sportfish. Included here are peacock bass, payara (dracula fish) and caribe (pirana). These two lakes have their individual beauty.
Camitagua, approximately 2 1/2 hours from Caracas by car, is nestled in the mountains and is lush with greenery. The lake itself is grassy and makes for some tough fishing conditions, but the rewards are tough to beat. The peacocks aren't the largest to be caught in Venezuela, but the numbers of fish coupled with the gorgeous surroundings give the fisherman a wonderful experience.
Lake Guri, in central Venezuela, borders Canaima National Park and is the third largest man-made reservoir in the world. This 3,000,000 acre lake makes its own weather which can be a bit tough at times, but gives one the feeling of being alone in the wilderness. The tropical jungle comes to the shores of this great lake making for wonderful photo opportunities at each sunrise and sunset. This is the place for those 20+ pound peacock and payara in a lake setting. The water level changes with the seasons, ensuring the fisherman the opportunity to use everything in their tacklebox at some point. No boring fishing here!
Both lakes offer a variety of non-fishing experiences. Howler monkeys, turtles and freshwater alligators are among the non-fish fauna of the area. Pack a lunch and head out for the coves and shores to enjoy the calm tropical scenery away from the cities.

Brackish Water Fishing - Laguna Tacarigua, Venezuela
Between Caracas and Puerto La Cruz is the brackish lagoon Tacarigua, where snook and tarpon abound.

Offshore Fishing - Venezuela and Trinidad
The southern Caribbean offers a variety of offshore fishing for the sport fisherman. The La Guaira Trench is just north of Maiquetia, where Venezuela's Simon Bolivar International Airport is located. This geological feature provides the currents that bring in the many types of marlin, sailfish, dorado (mahi mahi), oahu and other large salt- water fish.
Northwestern Trinidad is along the same current system as Venezuela.
